Driver

Child Safeguarding:
Level 3 - the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people.

ROLE PURPOSE:
The overall responsibility of the Driver for Tuwekeze Pamoja programme is to drive Save the Children staff with a purpose to facilitate the implementation of programme activities. The key role is to provide support during implementation of Tuwekeze Pamoja programme objectives. The Driver has a responsibility to adhere to driving procedures and guidelines, perform routine maintenance of the vehicle, support logistics activities and ensure that the vehicle is clean and in good condition.

SCOPE OF ROLE:
Save the Children has been operational in Tanzania since 1986 providing support to children through developmental and humanitarian relief programmes delivered in support of Government of Tanzania priorities and policies both directly and through local partners.  Current programming focuses on child protection, child rights governance, education, nutrition, HIV/TB and emergency response. In 2012, as part of a global reorganization process, Save the Children combined programmes of SCUK, SCUS, SC Sweden to create a single operation in Tanzania.  We currently have an operational presence in Dodoma, Singida, Shinyanga, Zanzibar, Songwe and Kigoma as well as Dar es Salaam and we also work through partners in other parts of the country. We employ nearly 100 staff and have an annual operating budget of approximately $10 million.

Reports to: Area Programme Manager in Songwe
Dimensions: Maintains strong linkages with Finance Assistant and Logistic Assistant in Songwe Programme area.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:


The Driver for Tuwekeze Pamoja programme in close collaboration with the Finance Assistant and Logistic Assistant will be responsible to provide support to Tuwekeze Pamoja programme team during implementation of the programme activities.  The key areas of accountability that will need to be performed include:
To drive Save the Children passengers within Songwe region and the country as required
Take proper care of assigned vehicles and the safety of the passengers at all times.
Carry out routine vehicle maintenance checks on a daily basis to ensure proper upkeep of vehicles and immediately draw the attention of the line manager of any damage or fault on the vehicle.
Carry out weekly maintenance checks on SC vehicles which includes: check of engine, gear box, alarm system, vehicle tools, battery, locks, brakes, clutch fluid levels, loose nuts and bolts on the vehicle, unexpected noises,  fluid leaks under the vehicle and any damage to the body or interior parts of the vehicle.
Altering the Area Programme Manager on time on the expiration dates of periodic servicing and maintenance of the vehicle in line with manufactures recommendations and SC transport policies and procedures.
Maintain the cleanliness of SC vehicles at all times, both internally and externally
Drive in a safe and reasonable manner following the standard speed limits set by SC at all times and report an accident at the earliest opportunity.
Complete the logbook on a daily basis as per the transport management handbook.
Make sure SC vehicles are fueled on half tank basis and every month end the tank is full before commencing the next month’s log book.

Child Safeguarding
All staff have an obligation to ensure they fully understand the provisions of the Child Safeguarding Policy, the Code of Conduct and related policies. They must conduct themselves in accordance with the rules of the Child Safeguarding Policy, in their personal and professional lives – which includes reporting suspicions of child abuse.
All staff must ensure the way they are carrying out their work is not putting children at risk (or further risk).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum of certificate in driving related course or basic vehicle mechanics.
At least three year experience in driving vehicle in development programme or related position
Valid clean class C Driving License
Volunteering experience in an international NGO is an added advantage.
Strong interpersonal and team skills.
Understanding in supply chain management in procurement, transport and distribution/ logistic
Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles.
To be readily available for the at least consecutive full four month period during the implementation of program.
Commitment  to  and  understanding  of  Save  the  Children’s  vision, mission and values including rights-based approaches
Good communication in English.
